Touching My Father’s Soul

Angelo tagged me with this meme:

  1. Grab the book closest to you.
  2. Open to page 123 and go down to the fourth sentence.
  3. Post the text of the following three sentences on your blog.
  4. Write the name of the book and the author.
  5. Tag three people.

I am currently reading two books so it was a choice between a Sherpa’s account about his ascent to Mt. Everest or a comic book about an ancient Gaulish warrior with super human strength who finds the lost city of Atlantis.

The comic book didn’t have 123 pages so the Sherpa it is.

He was adamant about not accepting even a cup of tea from outsiders, not even from his girlfriend, who traveled alongside him. At Base Camp, he was still agonizing over some modest help he had accepted when his bicycle broke down on a remote road in the middle East.

Goran reminded me of my father — they shared a relentless good cheer, a passion for strenuous work, and an appreciation for the value of hardship and honesty.

- Touching my Father’s Soul
By Jamling Tenzing Norgay

The author is the son of Tenzing Norgay, one of the first two men who reached the summit of Mount Everest. The other man is the more well-known Sir Edmund Hillary. The Norgays are Sherpas – the Buddhist people who live in the surrounding area of Mount Everest and who have been accompanying mountaineers to its peak since 1921. In his story, Jamling Norgay relates his 1996 ascent with the account of his father’s historic climb.

Sixter lent me this book. Look who autographed it right after his own climb on this great mountain.

I’m tagging:
1. Ipanema – because I’m curious about what she’s reading.
2. Verns – because even if you’re in the province, I’m sure you’ll find a way to blog. :)
3. Pinayhekmi – because I’m wondering how she’s doing with her BBC Top 100. :)

And you happen to pick a nice quote, I think. I had no idea who Leo Oracion is, (duh) until I googled him. :) It looks like a very interesting book to read.

Hehe, I didn’t know you also read ‘Asterix and Obelix’. BTW, I don’t think I’ve come across that edition yet, bago ba yan? :-)

Toe! Thanks for playing along…. what an interesting book that must be. Wish I had time to read “real” books…. or even comics for that matter…. that will be a new year’s resolution I think, after the studying is done :) Cheers!

Oh I grew up reading “Asterix and Obelix” as well as the adventures of “TinTin” – gosh it has been a long time since I saw a copy, your picture brought me back to my childhood :)

Niceheart, that was lucky that the quote was nice isn’t it? :) But Jamling’s prose is very beautiful and he has plenty of lessons to teach throughout his book. Yes, Leo Oracion is the first Filipino to climb Mt. Everest. :)

Snglguy, I have the complete collection. I think this Out at Sea and another one, Asterix and the Actress are not included in the collection with the pictures of the covers at the back cover. I think these are the ones made by the son of either Goscinny and Uderzo, I forgot which. But they’re just as funny and fun as the originals. I have other collector’s items too like the one where Asterix and Obelix was born, etc.. :)

Angelo, study first siempre… then when you pass, you can do anything. :) Nagkukunwari lang naman ako na nagbibigay ng good advice. :) I used to read Asterix after exams when I was in law school when I couldn’t handle anything school-related anymore.

Good luck with your studies! :)

hahahaha…it’s all online news! You got me this time. But I’ll take the last book I’ve read alright? I can’t pretend I’m reading harcovers because I haven’t for the last MONTHS!!! I’ll post my ok?

Sorry, Toe. I thought you’ll be gone up to the New Year. Kung di mo ko kinalabit, akala ko wala pa kayo. :)

Daphne, pareho tayo. I have the complete set of both Tintin and Asterix. I totally went crazy when I went to the Tintin store in Belgium. :) I didn’t know that there, they pronounced it as Tahn-Tahn… haha! :)

Ipanema, haha… me too… I spend a lot of time online. :) It could be just any book near you… no pressure at all. :)

Just got back last night… my Internet withdrawal symptom is not being helped by the poor Internet connection due to the earthquake in Taiwan. :(

Sis have you finished that book? It’s a wonderful book. I just finished “Tiger of the Snows”, autobiography of THE Tenzing Norgay, one of the 2 men to summit Everest. It’s an amazing book about Everest (how the summiting was the fruit of decades of trial and error), the Sherpas, Tenzing’s rise from poor shepherd boy to a hero and icon, etc. The book was last printed in 1952 and I got my copy from eBay.
There are 2, not 1, autographs in my book- Leo Oracion and Pastor Emata, the first 2 Pinoys to summit Everest.

Sixter, oo nga… di ko kc kilala si Pastor until they I saw a press release when they went to Chicago. I think they will climb Everest again. Anyway, I want to do book reviews in this blog. You want to guest write? Sayang naman all the books you read if you don’t write down your thoughts about them. Just write the book review and e-mail it to me. Any format… you don’t have to do the St. Joseph’s style review.

Book review?! Hmmmm sounds too difficult. Basta no format and I just talk about the book in whatever way, then I’m cool with that. I’m now reading Son of a Witch, sequel to Wicked, which is about the wicked witch of the west. Great reading :)

Sis, no format nga. I also asked Sis New Hamster to do book reviews. She’s going to do The Sunday Philosopher’s Club. Just do a simple fun book. :)
