Polydactyls and People with Six Toes

Published by Toe at 9:02 pm under Blogging, Family

Perhaps, I can’t really be too sure, but one of the entries in my blog that gets the most traffic, especially from search engines is about my sister who has six toes on her right foot. Almost everyday, I see “six toes” in my blog stats under the category “search terms people used to find your blog.” Furthermore, I still continue to get comments on that entry even if it’s more than four months old. So I thought I’d google “six toes” and see how my blog measures up.

Well, it didn’t measure up that well (p. 2 in Google) although I did learn a thing or two. First of all, there’s actually a name for people with more than the usual number of digits (and by digits, I mean toes and fingers, NOT arms and legs). They are called “polydactyls.” Oooh! Sixter has existed for decades and she didn’t even know that there’s a name for her!). And there are quite a few famous people who are polydactyls too. Unfortunately, I don’t know who the heck most of them are. The only people I can recognize in this Wikipedia list of polydactyl people are Anne Boleyn (second wife of Henry VIII) and Albert Uderzo, who I know very well… for don’t I have the complete set of Asterix comics? Uderzo is the second half of the famous French comic tandem Goscinny and Uderzo who created Asterix.

There are two other people … Marilyn Monroe and Storm herself… Halle Berry. Unfortunately, that these two lovely ladies are polydactyls are actually urban legends and very false.

And then there are also fictional polydactyls. The only one I could recognize though is the famous cannibal of “Silence of the Lambs,” Hannibal Lecter himself.

But probably the most famous polydactyl (and I was much surprised to learn this) is famous tennis star Maria Sharapova. According to this article, Sharapova’s cute pink manicured multi-digits were photographed while changing socks in a tennis match in Miami. She also told reporters that they were her “cute little piggies.” Apparently, it’s hereditary in some races. In fact, Sharapova’s father Yuri also has six toes.

Funny enough (or is it a relief?), sixter is the only one in the family with six toes (my my evil big brothers have extra warts here and there though). The same is true of her officemate JP.

So believe it or not, I’ve been writing the above post for more than a week now. It was paper and bureaucratic hell for Honey and me for the past week. Put that together with our impending holiday (packing, applying for visas, and buying pasalubong), I couldn’t seem to put in any Internet time.

But we’ve finally finished everything and here we are now in Changi Airport in Singapore for a loooong lay-over. I don’t know if we’re deprived or mababaw but we’re thoroughly enjoying this airport. There’s so much food (we’ve eaten three times since we got here), shopping, free Internet, free movies, free city tour of Singapore… I feel that our holiday has started even before it’s begun.

Boarding time! Gotta go!

OH, and Daisy Fuentes has six toes as well. I saw her foot in strappy sandals in a magazine once.

Aside from a very good airport and so many things to do, changi also boasts as the cheapest duty free shop in Asia. The prices there is more than 50% cheaper than outside the airport.

that’s why whenever i travel, i went to the airport 3 hours earlier. It’s never boring in Changi. :)

Hi Toe, thanks for dropping by my blog.

Halle Berry is a poly too? Nice information!

I don’t quite get it when you said, “Unfortunately, that these two lovely ladies are polydactyls are actually urban legends and very false.”

Hmmm… I’m missing out that “and very false part”. :-) )

They say polies are lucky. Dunno if it’s true though.

    Have a nice trip!

just because it’s one of the first things on google under polydactyl, i thought i’d at least clear one thing up… and i won’t say anything more than “look at the date on the sharapova article.” ha. makes me wonder though… childhood for polydactyls… This little piggy went to market, This little piggy stayed at home, This little piggy had roast beef, This little piggy had none. And this little piggy went… “Wee wee wee” all the way home… Oh sh*t…. and uh… This little piggy… Well… we never got that far son… and here’s why… Ok enough of that. Ciao!
