The Last Word
There’s no arguing with Dad. I don’t know if it’s because he’s a lawyer or because he’s 72, but he always has to have the last word. Take for example when he took Mom and six of his grandchildren (pre-teens) to Rockwell last week. Dad packed Mom and all the kids in his decades-old Mercedes Benz (like the batcar). Because the batcar was so old and there were eight people in the car (all the kids were big for their age), it started to roll down while they were stuck in traffic on a hill. Naturally, the batcar bumped the car behind them. The driver went down to talk to Dad.
The following is an excerpt from Mom’s e-mail about the dialogue between Dad and the man. The characters are “Daddy,” who is Dad of course and “Mama,” not mother but tagalog for man as in “mamang sorbetero.”
Daddy: “bakit, naka hand brakes naman ako a”.
Mama: “naatrasan ninyo ako “.
Daddy: “naka hand brakes ako”.
Mama: “naatrasan ninyo ako”.
So Daddy went down and saw that nakadikit nga ang mga bumpers.
Daddy said,(pasigaw pa daw) “e, bakit ka nakadikit sa akin?”
Hindi daw kumibo ang mama.
Daddy said “i-atras mo ang sasakyan mo.”
Inatras naman ng mama.
When daddy saw na walang damage, Daddy said “pasiencia ka na ha”.
See? He had the last word. But did he really? This is the continuation of Mom’s e-mail with the introduction of another character in our story – Luigi, my 11-year old nephew:
When Daddy was back in the car, and was able to start the car, Luigi
said, “Lolo, the car was rolling backwards, and you hit the car
behind.” Then after a little while he added, “I think Lolo needs to buy
a new car.”

mga tatay talaga!!!!
One thing about owning a Mercedes Benz is that you refuse to part with it even if its already decades old, and especially if it’s your first MB. I had a grand uncle who owned one, he refused to sell it even though he already brought a new one. And now his grandkid drives it.
As for your Dad, it’s probably the lawyer in him. But hey, you’re a lawyer too aren’t you?
Tonette, Daddy is 73, not 72.
Ang cute ni Daddy, funny pa he he. Mahirap talagang makipag argue sa mga lawyers at matatanda. 73, wow!
Haaay..buti na lang he admitted na he needs to buy a new car.
Wasn’t it the kid who said that Lolo needs a new car? Well, anyway, I think it’s his age. I also have elderly relatives and I know a few elderly folks who always have the last word.
Melai, sinabi mo pa… mahirap magpalake ng magulang!
Sngl, I’m an NPA – a non-practicing attorney.
The funny thing is Dad bought the car old… go figure.
Mom, nga pala, he’s 73 na!
Niceheart and Jane… yup! This time, it was Luigi who had the last word. That’s the weakness of old people… their grandchildren.
Sngl again, would you by chance be the grandkid who’s driving the Mercedes?
If I were that grandkid, your Dad would have a grandkid older than his children, lol!
hahaha. okay dad mo ha. looks like he’s a great lawyer. khet obvious na sya may kasalanan, natameme na lang ang mama. hehehe ;p
Haha Sngl… nabubuko siguro how old you are.
Actually, I’m the youngest and my siblings are in their forties na. Don’t tell me you’re 50?
Tin-Tin…inutusan pa niyang iatras yung koche. haha!
Hahahaha, idol ko Dad mo, I swear. I wish I could be like that! Ang ganda ng hirit.
Mabelle… I swear ganyan ka na din… remember Atty. Quimbo?
