Hainanese Chicken Rice and Pasta with Garden Herbs
It’s been a long time since I posted a food blog on Honey’s cooking. First, since we arrived in Manila from Cambodia last year, we were living back with my parents in Kamuning until March this year where the kitchen is practically off-limits to the spoiled rotten baby of the family who’s not allowed to do manual work (see this post). Second, since we moved into our new home, we’ve hardly had any weekends together because we’ve both been traveling so much. And third, if you’ve been reading this blog for a long time, you’d know that I deplore washing dishes and if we have no helper, I absolutely forbid Honey to use heavy woks or to even use more than one pot/pan (see this post).
But now, we’ve finally settled into our home by the bay with the cute little kitchen. And we also have Inday (who’s the helper of our helpers… they’ve been with the family for more than forty years and are now so old that they need their own helpers… see this post) to help. And then, we have this absolutely long weekend… which for the first time we’re spending lazily in our home… no work trips, no take home work, no social obligations… just sheer mind-numbing sloth and sleep-overload.
Ergo my friends, because of his pure love for me
, Honey spent Sunday cooking for me one of my favorite foods ever…. tadah… Hainanese Chicken Rice…
Okay, okay I have to admit that Honey didn’t make this from scratch (though that does not diminish in any way the pure love.
). I bought the Hainanese Chicken Rice box from a supermarket in Singapore when I was there last year for a meeting (you see… that’s how long we haven’t been staying home to cook… good thing we were able to beat the expiration date marked on the box).
Since I didn’t help out Honey, I actually don’t know what’s inside the bloody box… so sorry guys… can’t help you out there. But anyway, Honey said that it included the sauces (dark soy sauce, chili sauce and minced ginger) and the fragrances which I think you use to boil the chicken with and then use the stock for cooking the rice. Anyway, we’re trying to be healthy and we used brown rice (much to Honey’s chagrin because it took so long to cook).

No silly people… the chicken wasn’t included in the box! Uggh! Just imagine whole chicken in a box!  Neither was the cilantro Honey used for garnish. We bought those from the SM Hypermart (free plug! free plug!).
So anyway, it was just heaven. The chicken was very tender (you have to use spring chicken) and the tastes were divine… tasted like authentic Singaporean food. Just thinking about it is making me hungry again. And to complete the healthy picture… we also had stir-fried morning glory (that’s what they call kangkong in Southeast Asia).

Yum! Crunchy and garlicky and delicious!
And of course, Honey also cooked pasta flavored with herbs taken from my own herb garden (another meal ha… not the same meal.. that’s gluttony already). Sixter gave me these herbs – basil, rosemary, parsley and thyme.

I know… we’re supposed to put it in the balcony. But we were forced to bring it indoors because of Ondoy, Pepeng and Ramil. So what could be more sumptuous than food made from your own herbal garden?

Voila!

No cream, meatballs, tomatoes… just healthy olive oil, mushrooms, garlic, a variety of herbs and anchovies. Simple and very Mediterranean, don’t you think?
Enjoy the rest of the long weekend everyone!

Omg what a mouth watering blog post. *drools*
Aren’t we lucky we have hubbies who can whip up a storm in the kitchen? Bless them!
Although I don’t mind washing the dishes and the pots and pans as well.
Pareho pala tayo, si Mister din ang master chef of the household. And unlike you, washing dishes by hand is quite therapeutic for me kaya volunteer agad ako.
Ooooh I just wish I can try that dish. It looks sooo delicious. I wonder if they sell something like that in an Asian store here.
Daphne, bless them indeed.
Ewok, volunteer ka din dito?
Charles, it’s in a yellow box. It’s got other flavors too like curry and other Asian dishes.
