A Very Jologs but Funny and Special Love

Published by Toe at 6:10 pm under Personal, Philippines, TV

Honey will not be caught dead watching a Filipino movie. But he is still in Cambodia and I and my three old friends had nothing to do one Sunday afternoon a few weeks ago. Perfect timing. I can be as jologs as I want and I have a jolly-ogs good time. So off the four of us (myself, two manangs and one son of a manang – who tagged along with us under threat of loss of allowance by his mother) went to Gateway to watch A Very Special Love, the romantic comedy movie of John Lloyd Cruz and Sarah Geronimo.

To protect their kasosyalan (or so they think), ;) I am not disclosing the names of my friends (they all have dignified positions with decent employers and the son studies in a posh school). Myself… well, I can’t deny it any longer… I’m simply as jologs as can be (see this post).

Nonetheless, when we were queuing up in Gateway, we looked around surreptitiously to check if there were any media people waiting in ambush after we leave the theater to interview us about our rave reviews to be broadcast in the evening news or worse, The Buzz. Thankfully, there were none. Darn… secretly, I was prepared with my line which would have gone like this.. “Ang galing-galing ni Sarah! Ang guapo-guapo ni John Lloyd! Aaaaaaaaaaah!” with matching jumping up and down and clapping my hands in glee. Anyway, since there were no media people around at that time, I’ll just say it here – “Ang galing-galing ni Sarah! Ang guapo-guapo ni John Lloyd!” (jumping up and down and clapping my hands in glee).

The theater was almost full when we were choosing our seats at the box office so we had no choice but take the second row seats which were too darn near the screen. And with the tall and wide screen in the Gateway Cinema, I had to open my Chinese eyes really wide or else I’d only get to see up to half the screen, and I also had to use all of my peripheral vision so that my eyes could absorb the entire screen sideways. So there I was watching a Tagalog movie with my eyes wide open as if my eyeballs were about to pop out of their sockets.

The movie was a bit like Ugly Betty. John Lloyd was a rich dashing young man and president of a male magazine called “Bachelor” and Sarah was his editorial assistant. Sarah’s character was also a bit like Ugly Betty herself because of the way they made her wear her hair. But not really. So I was kind of confused really… were they really trying to make her a bit goofy-looking or was the wardrobe director not doing a good job? It wasn’t very clear.

So I could go on with a bunch of criticisms for the show (e.g., how could Sarah afford a Belo face wash if she was so poor… and then of course, there was the usual Filipino style over-acting). But we had wicked fun anyway and since we were old friends, we just guffawed out as loud as we can, especially at Sarah who was really funny.

Just a word about Sarah. Sometime ago, when she was partnered with Jericho Rosales in the teleserye Bituing Walang Ningning, I thought that the casting was terrible. Jericho was too much of a stereotyped handsome movie star while Sarah, although cute and very talented, was too much of a character and definitely not of beauty-queen caliber like Jericho’s former leading lady, Kristine Hermosa. I thought that Jericho could be matched better with Kristine Hermosa and the like. Nonetheless, Sarah was so good that during their romantic scenes… (to borrow an old seventies expression), I was so kilig to death.

Well, in this movie, Sarah again rose up to the challenge and I swear that she and John Lloyd looked really good and again, I was feeling so kilig as I munched my waffle dog. Part of the fun in watching a movie is choosing the food and eating it in the movie house and I so miss waffle dogs.

After the movie, all four of us had a headache… not from sitting too close to the wide screen… but from trying to restrain ourselves from crying buckets of tears. Hey, we had to restrain our tears because though we were manangs, we were too cool to cry in a Sarah Geronimo movie. Although this movie is a romantic comedy, as in all Filipino movies, they couldn’t help but inject a couple of tear-jerking dramatic scenes. During these scenes, I had to open my little eyes as wide as I could while biting my lips to keep those blasted tears from falling and embarrassing myself.

I guess I didn’t need to anyway. My friend’s son told his Mom, “Mommy, do you have tissue? My hands are sticky because of the popcorn.” It so happened that he made that request during the scene where John Lloyd was having a heart-to-heart talk with his father who told him for the first time in 25 years that he was proud of him. They were talking on the grave of John Lloyd’s mother who happened to be his father’s mistress. So yeah right… he needed the tissue for his sticky hands. :)

So there… my first movie in a movie house after several years. I’m so happy. When Honey comes back, we’ll watch more respectable, serious, intellectual movies like… like… like You Don’t Mess with the Zohan. :)

  2. Wilon 30 Aug 2008 at 7:23 pm

Bakit you’re not in this film…. I mean why isn’t Bea Alonzo in this film? hehe. I’m not really sure what jologs means, but parang it means baduy… or corny… or maarte?

John Lloyd Cruz as president of a magazine? I guess it’s possible…. JFK Jr. was also president of his own magazine. :D

  3. carlottaon 30 Aug 2008 at 10:44 pm

LOL naimagine kita tumatalon-talon sa tuwa at nagsisisigaw sakaling may media crew na mag-aambush interview sa inyo pagkatapos nung sine hehehe :D

nga pala, it was great meeting you din finally! :)

ang cute ng movie na ito. jologs na kung jologs, i enjoyed it the 2 times I watched it. second time, i watched with my 2 sisters and my mother; kilig kaming lahat. teka, “kilig to death” is a 70s term? i still use it now, and i was born in the 80s. hehe.

  5. Abanikoon 31 Aug 2008 at 8:02 am

Jologs or not, the most important thing is that you enjoyed the movie. We all need to be truly entertained from time to time. :)

  6. tin-tinon 31 Aug 2008 at 12:14 pm

ate toe, trust me.. it’s not ka-jologan anymore to watch a jlc film. trust me!

i watched it opening day. ako pala yung jologs. hahaha. but then, hindi lang pala ako. kahit yung mga super maaarte kong kakilala, napanood din nila. and some sa first day din.

Ang galing din nito Maam Toe :)

  9. myepinoyon 31 Aug 2008 at 4:07 pm

I think the three of you “cool guys” were playing the kids game similar to that of “kung sino una kukurap talo” which in this case “kung sino ang iiyak, hindi cool.”

Likewise, it was very evident that the young guy ay mas creative kesa sa mga manangs. LOL

  10. vernson 31 Aug 2008 at 4:19 pm

  11. IAon 31 Aug 2008 at 8:55 pm

Toe! Gusto ko ring maging jologs! Hahaha! whatever that means! Eversince I moved here, there’s this longing that comes every once in a while to watch a tagalog movie. Kahit yung mga corny, kaya ko nang pagtiyagaan pagnasa mood for something from home. Sigh.

  12. raytson 31 Aug 2008 at 9:42 pm

  13. Tingon 01 Sep 2008 at 12:34 am

You are so funny!

  14. shengon 01 Sep 2008 at 4:24 am

I also watched the movie -on its second day…. first showing of the day!!! Last day na kasi ng free time ko since my flight back to Majuro is the next day. O di ba, ako na nagbukas ng sinehan…. and I was by myself as my husband opted to watch The Dark Knight…. Nagkita na lang kami after…

Jologs man o hindi…the important thing is na enjoy ang movie…

So Toe, have you watched For the First Time? hehehe!

  15. snglguyon 01 Sep 2008 at 8:15 am

Hay nako, pareho kayo ng ex-wife ko. She loved watching these kinds of movies and would often cajole, nay… force me into watching them with her, lalo na kung kay Sharon Cuneta… waaaah. But it’s okay, since I get to have an hour and a half of sound sleep, hehe. :-D

  16. PMon 01 Sep 2008 at 8:51 am

oh man! my mom is forcing me to watch yet another cheesy movie, For the first time, the one with KC and Richard. I told her I’d pay for her ticket and even throw a bucket of popcorn but she has to watch it ALONE!

  17. Toeon 01 Sep 2008 at 10:35 am

Oh darn! :) Cge… padalhan kita ng DVD ng A Very Special Love. :)

  18. Toeon 01 Sep 2008 at 10:39 am

Wil, yes it could mean baduy… but even more than that. It could also refer to a person who knows all the baduy actors, actresses, movies, TV shows, etc.. :) Oh, JL is not Honey… that’s Honey’s evil twin. See? That kind of reasoning is jologs. :)

  19. Toeon 01 Sep 2008 at 11:02 am

Carlotta, it was great meeting you too. :) Haha… nai-imagime mo ba kong making a fool of myself? :)

  20. Toeon 01 Sep 2008 at 11:05 am

Hi Gail! :) Awright! Jologs tayong lahat… way cool! :) Oh great… Kilig to death is still being used… I don’t feel so old anymore. :)

  21. Toeon 01 Sep 2008 at 11:21 am

Abaniko, ang saya-saya. :) Curious lang ako as I want to get a man’s point of view, would you go with a girlfriend or a sister to watch a Tagalog movie? :)

  22. Toeon 01 Sep 2008 at 11:23 am

    Tin-Tin, ang guapo-guapo ni John Lloyd! :) Haha… hurrah… pareho tayong jologs! :)

  23. Toeon 01 Sep 2008 at 11:25 am

Hi John sweetie… next time, si Piolo-Sarah naman papanoorin natin ha? :)

  26. Toeon 01 Sep 2008 at 11:31 am

Verns, hehehe… chorva ka talaga… ok yan… I’m sure they need more chorvaness in Maldives. :)

  27. Toeon 01 Sep 2008 at 11:39 am

IA, naku… naging jologs ako when I moved to Cambodia. :) We had free TFC kc and because there was no other entertainment, I’d watch teleseryes. I especially learned to watch teleseryes when I got the chicken pox :) Then, whenever I’d go to Manila, I’d buy DVDs of Piolo, Jericho, John Lloyd, etc. Don’t worry, you can be jologs too.. haha! :)

  28. Toeon 01 Sep 2008 at 11:51 am

    Rayts, hahaha… you’re my hero… opening week ha. :)

Naku, ayaw kita kasama mag-sine… baka mo ko piktyuran.. hehe! :)

  29. Toeon 01 Sep 2008 at 11:58 am

  30. Toeon 01 Sep 2008 at 12:03 pm

Sheng, hahaha… ang dami-dami natin… ang saya-saya! :) At second day, first showing ha?

  31. Toeon 01 Sep 2008 at 12:05 pm

Snglguy, all women are like that… so if you want to marry again, you have to endure Tagalog movies again kung ayaw mo ng away. :)

  32. Toeon 01 Sep 2008 at 12:07 pm

PM, hehe… I think I put my foot down with KC… parang masyado siyang maarte. :) Achaka wala naman siya accomplishment save being the daughter of Sharon and Gabby. :) So yeah… your Mom has to watch that ALONE. :)

  33. leion 01 Sep 2008 at 3:25 pm

mabuti naman at naaliw ka din sa movie na to. ehehe. kakatuwa no?! :)

  37. bingon 01 Sep 2008 at 10:20 pm

para kay wil – i think jologs can never be defined as maarte. pag maarte, sosyal. it’s the opposite from what i understand of the word.

at nang-churva ang verns.. he he :-D

  39. Veraon 02 Sep 2008 at 12:57 am

It’s never been cool to be jologs, until this movie, no? Wahaha :) I saw the movie and enjoyed it – to the next level! I was surprised, but my parents actually watched it too! I think it was the sun dance that drew them in.

  40. luna mirandaon 02 Sep 2008 at 2:09 am

i was actually giggling, imagining how you and your friends kept yourselves from crying! hahaha sounds familiar! di ko ‘to napanood, ang mga jologs friends ko ay nag-abroad na. gusto rin ‘to panoorin ng nanay ko. gwapo nga ni john lloyd (jologs na kung jologs!hehe). sayang, walang media outside the theater…:D

  41. Gina G.on 02 Sep 2008 at 2:46 am

It’s living abroad that’s the culprit. We’ve realized that things that we used to take for granted, like our Pinoy food and Pinoy movies and shows (among others) ay nakaka-miss pala.

I don’t have Filipino channel and I get my ‘fix’ from YOutube and sometimes when I’m lucky, a burned DVD of the latest pinoy movies (shhhh…) from a good blogger friend ;-)

All of them, kahit the comedies made me cry. Ewan ko ba.

  42. Ewokon 02 Sep 2008 at 4:52 am

My hubs is into foreign films, but would not touch Filipino and Bollywood. I put Bollywood movies and Filipino movies on our Netflix queue and I had him watch Kasal Kasalo Kasali and it didn’t get much rave review from him. I like Judy Ann, but I only like her with Piolo. But I’ll see if I can put this on my queue.

  43. Major Tomon 02 Sep 2008 at 9:46 am

I am similarly fond of local movies. I had watched that youth classic movie titled “Bagets” and it’s so memorable to me. I only noticed that tagalog movies of years ago are so much better and more well-madethan today, even if they starred teeny-boppers like Gabby Concepcion or Maricel Soriano, palaging socially-responsive at saka my message. Nowadays, medyo masyado naparami and mga love stories, here and there.

Funny jologs …hehe .. My wife also went to her favorite bootleg DVD store but the bootleg version isn’t out yet :) This movie will be showing here for a week at a movie theatre in our part of the city and my wife has already called her friends and asked me to baby site our daughter :)

  48. hazeon 05 Sep 2008 at 3:01 am

Now that I am abroad I miss watching kilig films. For sure, when I will be back I will bring a lot of DVD with me, I have few of them kaya paulit ulit na lang. I’m coming home very very soon :D !!

  49. nicehearton 05 Sep 2008 at 9:31 am

Hindi ko pa rin ma get ang meaning ng jologs and ano ba yang chorva. Well, anyway, I won’t mind watching movies like these. :) Once in a while, my mother brings over tagalog DVDs. I watched When Love Begins last weekend. :)

  50. annamanilaon 05 Sep 2008 at 7:31 pm

Kilig-making and tear jerking are really the stuff that Pinoy movies are made of. I guess that movie is really a big hit because wherever I go that’s what people said they watched. My bonch watched it too and in fact made yaya to me but I preferred to play online scrab and when she came home she acted as though I missed half of my life.

  51. tutubion 05 Sep 2008 at 9:22 pm

[...] Toe blogged about this movie A Very Special Love and guess what, this movie is showing in Metro Toronto, in our part of the city ! Last week my wife and her Pinay friend on they day off became total jologs and drove to the cinema house near the our local town centre to watch the movie. Not content, my wife also bought the pirated DVD last Sunday at an Asian mall. Me? I haven’t watched it yet Looks like we are seeing a steady supply of Pinoy movies being shown in local theatres here after the Indian Bollywood movies caught the local cinemas like wildfire. The word jologs wasn’t in existence yet when I left Pinas but hey, jologs or no jologs, it’s a treat to watch any Pinoy movie in theatres here [...]

  75. Leahon 02 Oct 2008 at 11:12 am

Naks!
Pero I have link to this movie.

Enjoy naman talaga ang outing with the girls.

  76. kenton 25 Oct 2008 at 2:47 am

i had to download this in Veoh. Nabitin ksi kami ni wifey when someone gave us a link in youtube and as usual it has to be taken down. 7/14 na kami then hindi na accessible. Hindi pa namin tapos panoorin pero the first part was really funny and I really like the “sundance”. Hey Ramblings, where do you watch pinoy movies in metro toronto? Im just in mississauga. San ka bumibili ng Filo DVD? Yan ba yung dito sa Dundas? Jologs and predictable Filo movie plot. Pero dun masaya si wifey eh.
