The Bridal Truck
Most dreamy-eyed brides go to their grand Cinderella-weddings in flower-laden long white limousines which goes by the name of “bridal car.” Myself, I had no such luck. Instead, I went to my wedding in a “bridal truck”.

I also dreamed of going to my wedding in an elegant posh bridal car. However, as in life, weddings don’t usually go the way we want them to. First of all, in July 2002, the entire Metro Manila was inundated with floods. It was raining, as old people would say, siyam-siyam (siyam meaning nine, so the saying means that it has been raining vigorously and incessantly for nine days and nine nights… 31 days short of the 40 days and 40 nights in the flood the Bible story Noah’s Ark fame). Except that the siyam-siyam rain before my wedding didn’t go for nine days… it went for almost two weeks… and my wedding reception was OUTDOORS on a rooftop.
So naturally because of the floods, the white BMW limousine Honey borrowed from his cousin which was supposed to be my bridal car was stranded somewhere in the south and couldn’t fetch me. So Sixter, who also happens to be my Ninang (much to her chagrin as she fancies herself as still quite youthful), came to the rescue and lent me her truck. It’s a lucky thing that her husband had the good sense and foresight to choose a white truck which was perfect for inundated wedding purposes. Mom and her cronies, the Handmaids of the Sacred Heart (they fix the flowers in our church in Kamuning, and for my wedding, they also generously volunteered their services to do my wedding flowers) attached a wreath of white flowers in front of the truck, and voila! My bridal truck!
Anyway, one more thing I’m going to share.. we got married at the 17th century Nuestra Senora de Gracia in Guadalupe, Makati (yeah, quite near the creek which was dangerously threatening to overflow). This was also where Billy and Gracia got married in the popular PLDT series of Hello Billy commercials. It’s a small intimate church and my Kamuning choir sounded fabulous in it and I could just see the guests getting quite tearful when they sang Ikaw as I marched down the aisle. Or maybe the guests were tearful because their feet all got wet in the flood… not really sure. Oh… and it was only P5,000 at that time and we had no problem making a reservation with only three months notice.

Oh well! They say that the rains bring the bride and the groom luck. And just look…six whole years! Good thing Honey is crazy about me or else I don’t know how he could put up with me all this time… hrhrhr!

At least it’s a handsome white truck that fetched you and not some dilapidated 10-wheeler monster. Hehe. Cool, huh?
wow astig naman ang bridal car mo!
may nabasa akong isang website that features weddings, at yung isang wedding feature dumating ang bride and groom in vespa scooters (separately)
Pwede magdagdag:
Good thing Honey is crazy about me else, he would not dare come out from floods (???) and heavy rain. LOL
Wow. Bridal truck. Never heard of one before. It sounded more like a truck that delivers brides to different locations! Anyway, it is better to have a bridal truck than to have nothing at all, diba?
Bridal truck hehe Galing naman at least you made to the church despite the floods.
hi, Toe. happy 6th! good thing pala crazy si Honey, para meron pang madaming years to come with him.
Congratulations on your 6th year. What a nontraditional way to begin your life together. Ni bagyo walang makakapigil pag talagang nanggigigil. Cheers to more wonderful years to come.
hello toe! are you already in manila? i don’t know if your Honey checks our friendster group but there’s this friday club thing goin on in Lucena. Once a month, on a friday, classmates meet somewhere to catch up at mag alaskahan. For this month, we will on July 25. I’ll be in the Philippines for two weeks and I hope I’ll finally meet you in person.
Regards!
I love it!! That is way too cool!! Happy 6th anniversary
Nga pala, dyan din kami kinasal ng Honey ko..same year…November..pero doble na ang bayad namin!! Hmmm…parang nagoyong ata kami!! Priest nyo rin ba yung bisaya?
Sabi nila, suwerte daw pag inulan. It rained on my wedding day too kaya heto, suwerteng-suwerte ako (haha).
i like that church. pero nagulat ako. kala ko sa kamuning church kayo nagpakasal.
happy anniversary sa inyo ni honey.
ate toe, can you email me? may itatanong lang kse ako.. di ko alam pano ka macontact. when will you be returning to the philippines ba?
ate toe, email mo ko ha. thank you
wow! that’s nice to reminisce those times. never been to guadalupe church yet but they say it’s beautiful. looking at your photo… it confirms what they say. i really need to visit this church one time.
P5000??? when was that? hehehe…
Eto ang sinasabing kahit anong bagyo tatahakin masunod lamang ang puso
! Your bridal car was perfect to finally bring you to the church without the hassle of crossing the inundated streets in Manila..
Wow, was leaving near Guadalupe Makati (West Rembo) before but never been to this church. I don’t think if it’s coincidence our husband has the same name, we got married July 21, but in 2001 so malapit na rin 7th anniversary namin
and I call him Honey too ! Yes tmy honey is crazy too because he can support me all these years
!
Happy Anniversary Toe and to your Honey !
ooops was living pala errr .
happy wedding anniversary pala.
at least there’s a contingency car for you. typhoon season kasi talga july. I’ve yet to visit that church though i’ve passed by the place…shame
bliss! the bridal truck isn’t that bad, sometimes it’s nice to be different.
Sus! di hamak na mas mahal pa rin yang Ford Sport Trac kesa ordinaryong kotse ano? So, sosyal pa rin ang dating, hehehe
Happy wedding anniversary ba?
Happy 6th annivrsary Ma’am!!!
May God continue to bless you and guide you and strengthen your faith, hope, love and marriage…filled you with peace…LOVE is indeed the greatest gift of all!
I hope you can join the nominee for the Top 10 PINOY EXPATS/OFW BLOGs of 2008 here at Http://jbsolis.blogspot.com
katuwa naman po ng story mo..
Abaniko, a dilapidated 10-wheel monster would be cool too, right? Baka puede ding puti.
Carlotta, hey… vespas are cool (especially if the bride prefers the wind-blown hairstyle) … getting ideas for your own wedding?
LIW, yeah… definitely better than swimming to the church.
Daphne, yeah… and it had another purpose… we put all the gifts at the back of the truck so we were able to bring everything with us to our hotel suite.
Thanks Sexy Mom!
Nasanay din siya sa kakulitan ko.
Thanks Ewok!
I’m going home on the 27th. Si Honey, sa September pa. But I’m sure we’ll be able to meet sometime… maybe next year… or maybe we’ll visit you in Marshall Islands.
Cookie, wow… isn’t the church just cool? Whaaaat? It doubled in price after just a few months??? No. Our family friend-priest, who also married my five other siblings, married us together with four other priests who were also family friend-priests too of Honey.
Dong Ho, six years ago nga e… 2002.
It’s a wonderful church… no one knew about it at that time so it was a breeze making a reservation on such short notice.
Haze, malapit na din anniversary mo. Happy Anniversary to Haze and her Honey!
Zherwin, how are your own wedding plans going?
Tutubi, you should visit the place… I’m sure you’d be able to take some fantastic photos… it’s a very picturesque church.
Hi Freeze… yeah, that truck is cool, isn’t it?
Snglguy, that’s a Ford Explorer… sosyal naman yung truck.
Hey, thanks!
Thanks Jasmin! I really appreciate it!
Hi Kenji and Sheila. I don’t know if I will qualify. I’m going home next week.
Salamat Lei!
At least white truck..hehehe.
Congrats on your 6th year!
It is the things that go wrong that you remember. If it were a traditional limousine, would you have remembered? These are also the ones that give events some … uhmmm … character? value? In the same way that an imperfectly printed stamp become the more premium collectors’ items.
Rains are usually associated with plenty, a bountiful harvest.
Happy anniversary, Toe and her honey. Swerte nyo for having each other. Keep it that way always … pero sana plus one, or two, or three ….
Ready to save the bride. Sosi pa rin ang dating!
Hehe, I know it’s an Explorer, but there’s also a version of that called a Sport Trac…
Uuuy, malapit na siyang umuwi… kita kita ulit ha?
I love that church! I also want to get married there.
Quite creative ! That white truck ( looks like a Ford Explorer sport pick-up) certainly fits the job description with all the decorations hehe
Looked like you had a wonderful wedding. Congrats
a unique bridal car, indeed…and a beautiful church! i’m sure you had a fabulous wedding despite the rain and flood. happy 6th!
Hey Happy Anniversary.
Tama sila at least your story has an added twist to the romance.
6 years… so… do you believe in the 7-year itch?
Ha ha I’ve forgotten all about that
At 4×4 kaya baha-proof. Welcome back home, sis!
Congrats on your wedding anniversary! It doesn’t matter if it was a bridal truck or a bridal calesa. What matters is that you guys are happy and continue to be in love with each other. Congrats again!
That’s just one grand bridal car and if you ask me, that’s so way cool, like so unique and distinctive, adds flavor to the memories later on, and laugh about it and be giddy about it.
hahahaha! at least you were unique!
too bad it was raining on your big day; but that just means added blessings to you and your hubby! congrats on your wedding anniversary!

Thanks Ann.
Annamanila, honga… the rains and the truck really made the wedding memorable.
Okay lang kahit walang plus… basta always “2″ kami.
Thanks Leah. Ang galing pumili ng ninang no?
Ade, kelan ba?
BW, yes, that’s exactly what it is.
The wedding was really great (well, everyone thinks that one’s wedding is always the best).
Thanks Luna Miranda.
Well yes… it was quite a unique car… and I felt very protected from the rains. Naawa nga ako sa mga guests… but they still came despite the floods.
Thanks Auee.
We’re together almost 24-7. Except for now… we’re apart for almost a month… and I could never get used to not having him around.
Thanks Panaderos. Yes, we’re quite lucky that we found each other and our relationship is always growing stronger.
Kahit nga tricycle o elepante pa yon.
Hi Major Tom. It is grand, isn’t it?
You are right… it definitely gave the wedding something unique and distinctive to talk about over and over again.
Thanks Caryn!
Indeed the truck and the rains were all blessings on that special day of ours.

aha! finally a much coveted wedding picture. Here I am talking to my mom casually about my “important” friends at the foreign service, and was telling her how you actually have a website (or more appropriately a blog)…and as conversations and thoughts go, the topic wandered into, hmmm, I haven’t seen a picture of toe’s wedding. And voila! just a few weeks ago turns out you just posted this. you and I really have a lot in common, you know. I think our thoughts travel in the same wavelength, hehehe. Thanks for the photo. Even if it’s just the bridal truck. Next time post naman one on the altar.
Mom-fka-atty, your important friends in the Foreign Service? That would be Tess and Kit. Floating nga ako ngayon e.
I haven’t seen your wedding photos either… you should also post in your blog… or send me if you have them somewhere else online. Myself, wala pa akong digital copies… hahaha… hindi pa yata uso yon noong 2002.
Just that photo… I had it scanned for this post.
