Global Earth Day; Little Things You Can Do to Save the Earth
Today is Earth Day.
I have at least two suggestions on how all of us could do little things on how to save our planet.
- Bring Your Own Bag. Say no to plastics AND paper when you’re out shopping and bring your own reusable canvas bags instead. If you want to buy these hip and totally cool canvas bags, you can find out more about them here.
Okay, okay… I’m pimping this for my sister, popularly known in this blog as Sixter - due to the fact that she has six toes on her left foot. But hey! For only P100, you can help save the environment by not contributing to the mounting landfills.
And that photo above advertising her bags? That’s her daughter and my godchild. She conceptualized and directed that photo herself. Not bad for a borloloy.
- Save energy by removing the ghosts in your home – remove the phantom load. What is a phantom load? According to the Department of energy, “A phantom load (PL) is an electrical device that is operating 24 hours a day 365 days a year, even if you think the device is turned off. These are the glowing red lights you see at night, reminder lights that your appliances are using electricity even when you think that they are off. They have hidden energy cost that most people are never even aware of.†Samples of common phantom loads include: microwave with clock consumes 15 watts an hour; an instant-on TV, 28 watts; a VCD/DVD player, 14 watts; a hi-fi stereo, 20 watts; a cordless phone, 4 watts, an answering machine, 4 watts, and a power adaptor and AVR, 8 watts. Here are some ways to deal with this:
- Unplug the appliance! However, constant plugging and unplugging is a pain and wears out the plug and socket quickly.
- Use quality extension cords with multiple female plugs that are switched on the plug strip. When the plug strip is switched off, all the appliances plugged into the strip are disconnected from the power source.
- Switch off your instant-on TVs and stereos.
Not only can you help save the earth, this will also lead to a significant decrease to your electricity bills. You can read more about the phantom load in this post.
These are very easy things to do so do it now and do your part in saving the earth!

Great post on earth day! AKo malaimutin ako sa mga outlets. Better pay attention din. PAmbawas din yan sa bayad ng kuryente. hehe
Ako I make sure all the appliances in my bedroom are hooked on an extension cord with multiple on/off switch.
I wish there’s a way humans can control or eliminate farting altogether, nakakadagdag din sa pollution yun di ba?

really good suggestions toe. i honor people who stresses the need to take part in environmental preservation and action. here’s a blog that does that.
thanks toe.
Well, I re-use my bags (and avoid using plastic ones), I recycle, but I’m rubbish with turning that red dot off , especially in the bedroom when I’m so sleepy, it’s so hard to get up and switch the tv off…
Count me in ! I have always been a supporter for cleaner and greener environment ! Let’s save the earth by starting at home!
Ferdz, thanks!
Yuck!
Thanks Dong Ho!
And thanks for including me in your Tribute Earth post. I really appreciate it.
Pining, oh, we don’t turn off that dot before we sleep too.
But we do turn it off before we go to work.
Thanks Haze! Mother Earth needs the cooperation of each of one of us!
Gosh I can tell you that when I changed ALL my appliances 2 years – washer, dryer, fridge, oven/stove, dishwasher, microwave oven – to the newer environmentally friendly models, I saved almost half on my electric bill ! My old were appliances made in the 80’s when no one really cared about the environment and they were power hogs
Earth day should really be Everyday!
Nice suggestions… I plead guilty but will try to better my life in the future!
Promise, Toe!
Sis thanks for promoting my bags
The phantom load is also commonly called vampire appliances because they “suck” electricity even when they are off.
Interesting and informative post. Phantom load ha. What about cell phone batery charging … i sometimes wonder how much it costs. With everyone in this big family charging his phone every other day … teka ….
Nice earthday poster! I see bags like that — but usuallly green colored — at check-out counters of many supermarkets. P100? I usually need 6-8 bags. aay …
Reusable canvas bags are becoming very popular. Even the large supermarkets here are now selling them. I don’t see too many people using them though.
Good suggestions on the phantom load.
About the poster, is your niece thinking about going into advertising/marketing/graphic design?
we use reusable bins instead of plastic bags.
BW, that’s really great. When I was in the States nga, I was asking my sister, who owned a big washing machine, whether her bills are astronomical considering the amount of daily laundry for the family. And she said nga that all her appliances are economical and environmentally friendly. Gee, wala pa yata nyan dito.
Pinaywife, haha… that’s great that a big department store like SM is promoting these reusable bags.
You are right… everyday should be earth day and these habits should be naturally instilled in us.
Sidney, haha… you are funny.. don’t worry… I’m not the environment police.
Hi Sis, hindi ako nagpaalam kay Mariel.
But I’m sure she doesn’t mind.
How was your TV guesting?
Annamanila, naku… guilty din kami jan sa cellphone charging before. Basta fully-charged na, tanggalin na… this will also extend the phone’s battery life. There was a time before when we would charge our phones forever.
I know what you mean… kung ako nga… I need a lot of bags when I go grocery shopping… what more you with your big family?
Wil, yes, even Oprah sells those bags… but really expensive… $10 yata.
My niece is only 14… I don’t know what she wants to do.
Manilenya, hahaha… tawa ako ng tawa dito! Ang cute cute sobra ng alaga mo!
At wais talaga… ayan, nakapamasyal nga kayo. Cguro spring na jan… ang ganda-ganda!
Evi, wow really? I’ve never heard of that.. sounds really good!
Take care Manilenya!
