Kamuning Market and other Trivia on Kamuning
I love my Province of Kamuning (see this post to see why I call it province though it’s just really a barangay or area in Quezon City).
And I was happy to receive this email letter from one of my readers because answering it is a great excuse to talk about my hometown again.
Dear Toe,
May I just say that you have a very nice blog
I think I’ll be adding it to my list of regular reads! Anyway, seeing as you know Kamuning quite well, I just wanted to ask how to get to Kamuning market. I’ve lived in Quezon City all my life, but I’ve never ventured out in that area!
Thanks so much in advance, and I hope you keep up the nice work!
Cheers,
Lynn
Dear Lynn,
I’ll try my best to give you directions from my poor wasted memory.
If you’re on EDSA and you’re coming from Makati, proceed to the direction of Quezon City. Do NOT go up the Kamuning overpass. You will know you are near the Kamuning overpass by 1) the excessive build-up of traffic, and 2) the famous Nepa-Q-Mart.
Do you know the corner of Kamias where you will find a 7-11 and Wendy’s (why are they always together) and across that is a Jollibee? Well, DON’T go there… unless you’re hungry of course. Myself, I could go for a Jollibee Chicken Joy and palabok.
Anyway, after Kamias Road intersects through EDSA, it becomes Kamuning Road. But you can’t turn left from 7-11. You have to go a few meters ahead and make a u-turn in one of the breaks. If you’re commuting, you can take a Project 2-3 jeepney from there, as well.
After you U-turn, turn right on the bus stop (formerly, where the Queen’s Supermarket was located) and that would be Kamuning Road. There is a Red Ribbon there and I don’t know if the sports store Botak is still standing there. Botak is an inversion of takbo or “to run.” Near the tiny iskinita (alley), they have a barbeque stand where you will see someone brushing the the most delicious muro ami barbeque (mura na, madami pa or mura na, madumi pa) with their red-brown sauce.
By the way, my Dad’s family moved from Batangas to Quezon City when he was in high school and they were one of the few families who lived on Kamuning Road. At that time in the forties, Kamuning Road was still covered with talahib (wild grass). Who could have imagined?
Anyway, just drive on and on along Kamuning Road and you will pass through a few antique shops, dress shops, flea markets, book shops, dental clinics, apartment buildings, banks, office buildings, beauty parlors, a vintage car garage, etc.. There used to be a Kambingan somewhere there and my Dad, from his office, would usually bring us home either adobo or kare-kareng kambing (goat). Oooh… I can imagine the smell now.
If you keep driving and you reach Tomas Morato, it means you’ve overpassed your destination.
So before you reach the end of the road which intersects Tomas Morato, you will see the Delgado Clinic. Right across that is a Mercury Drug Store. Turn left there… dodging jeepneys, tricycles, and pedestrians, along the way.
Just amble along that road and savor the sweet smells of fishballs, sweet corn, kikiam mixed with the exotic smell of canals and the nearby Kamuning Creek. There used to be a Vermont’s (department store, supermarket, bookstore) on the right side of the street. When you reach the end of the road… voila! That’s the Kamuning Market.
Kamuning Market is quite special to me. As a child, my siblings and I hardly bought any clothes from stores (especially me… as most of my clothes are hand-me-downs from my five siblings). But aside from the hand-me-downs, Mom would usually sew all our clothes – uniforms, pajamas, street clothes, etc. and we would buy our fabric from the Kamuning Market.
So enjoy your shopping trip in Kamuning! Besides the famous fabrics center, the Kamuning Market also has a wet market and a lot of wonderful tailors. I’ve had quite a few suits and barongs made from there.
All the best,
Toe

My choirmate Kent listed down some great trivia about Kamuning in the comments section of the original Kamuning post. Here they are:
- The Kamuning Bakery has been standing for more than a hundred years now. Go to this place and you would still see pictures of this place from the pre-World War I era hanging on the walls. It should have a credit of having a historical thing. Too bad half of the space is made into a resto wannabe. But the bakers still make the pandesal from cogon.
- You dont have to go to Divisoria to get a good deal in fabrics. Kamuning Market offers the fabrics at the same prices. Even Imelda and Kris Aquino would go there to shop for their fabrics. But as you go inside the telahan side, look up-right… theres a “Dental Clinic†sign… the dentists there are the best!
- Kamuning used to have Vermonts where I buy my school supplies. I didnt have to go to National Bookstore then. Vermonts had everything. This was located in K-A near the market
- Kamuning also used to have a Cinema. It was at the corner of Kamuning Road and Judge Jimenez. But as a kid then I cannot go to that movie house as it featured only bomba films..at double showing pa ha…hahaha. Now its being converted to a christian school which I think is a good turnabout for the building.
- Oh, I almost forgot… the province of Kamuning is not complete with all the morning shoutings of….. tahoooo! I think this is typical metrowide but there is just a specific sound and you know that you are in Kamuning. Thats the call of Mang Joe. Other magtatahos have to modulate their voice in order to resonate across the neighborhood. But not Mang Joe. He has this rich natural baritone voice and it’s as if you’re hearing an opera singer in tune shouting the thing he’s selling. Our house is in the middle of the block but you know when he’s at the kanto. I hope I could still catch him when I go back to the Philippines.
Thats my share for being a long time resident of this great province in the heart of Quezon City.
If you are from Kamuning, do you have other anecdotes, trivias, and stories to share? If you are not from Kamuning, tell me about your hometown.

Hello Toe,
Thanks for featuring my Kamuning Trivias. Im sure there are a lot more to share about this province of Kamuning. i hope to start blogging as much as you do.
Hello Lynn,
I hope you dont loose your way going to the market. Basta ang best landmark ngayon going to the market is take Kamuning road, when you see Mercury Drug(and i hope its still there) at the corner pasukin mo yung street na yun. yun na! Kung hindi mo alam ang Kamuning Road, look for a jeep that says Kamuning, Project 2/3.. sundan mo o sakyan.
I wish the Philippines would adopt a GPS type thing..
take EDSA south 10km
Exit 16 Kamuning 0.1km
turn left L Shanghio 0.5km
Kamuning Market at right
Distance: 11.5km
Time: 2 hours
kamuning province pala ha. thanks for the tip on the old bakery….gusto ko yan. maganda nga dyan sa kamuning market
for lynn, commute way, the nearest MRT station is GMA but you need to walk towards Cubao towards Kamuning then board a jeep bound for Quiapo et al. you may take a cab at the MRT station
Ang haba mo namang magbigay ng direksyon, tonette… andaming pasikotsikot. Mawawala yata ako pag ako ang pupunta dun, hehehe.
gusto ko rin yang kamuning bakery. sana makapunta ako one of these days
naalala ko nung preschool ako nag field trip kami sa queen’s grocery hehehe
i once visited the place when i was young. i can never go there with my father.
but reading your directions, di ako maliligaw ha ha
Kent, I had to put in your Kamuning trivias… they’re more useful than any of the weird stuff I put in there… like Queen’s… wala na yon diba?
But really… I loved those trivia… I didn’t know a lot of those like Mang Joe (which was really cool) and the pre-war photos.
In fact, though I used to eat Kamung bakery pandesal everyday of my student life, I’ve never been inside the bakery itself.
Tutubi… yeah… if you read my old post, parang probinsiya talaga jan.
Oh, thanks for the commute tips.
Snglguy, madami lang akong kuwento… it’s just really one straight road (Kamuning Road) and then turn at the Mercury Drug Store.
Carlotta, haha… that’s so funny… field trip at Queen’s.
I do have fond memories there. There used to be a short cut from our house to Queen’s.
My parents still buy Kamuning Bakery pandesal everyday until now.
Bingskee, haha… I need to reread this nga when I go home too… I want to buy some fabrics and go to the tailors there… they’re quite good.
I’m from the Province of Philam Homes along West Avenue in Quezon City. The Province of Kamuning was and still is a favorite destination for me. The Kamuning Market is the palenke I go to when I need to go to a palenke. It is also the favorite palenke of my kids. I started bringing them there when they were 6 months old. My sister calls me the “reyna ng palenke” because most of the tinderas/tinderos know me. Most of them call me “anak” or “ara mina.” Yep, that “ara mina”. Don’t know why kasi di ko naman siya kamukha. Our favorite stalls are the “saguhan” and the gawaan ng mga balat ng lumpia. It’s best to buy the lumpia wrappers freshly made. Warm and still soft para madaling i-roll.
Yun suki namin sa telahan ay si “Billy’s.” Kapampangan yun. Magaganda yung mga barong fabric. Pati pang-pantalon. Ngayon nga pwede na ding mag-made-to-order sa kanya. They’re pants are comparable to the higher end haberdasheries.
Ngayon pati uniform ng mga anak ko dyan ko na din pinapatahi.
Ano pa ba ang Kamuning stories ko? Ay oo..yung husband ko dyan din dati nakatira. May apartment sila dati along Kamias. Now it’s his uncle and his family who lives there. Sa ibaba nung apartment may negosyo sila. Pagawaan ng aircon tsaka trucking. And yes, suki din kami.
Vermonts!! I used to go there to buy my sewing stuff. Also my yarn and lubid for making macrame.
Kongkong622, when our house in Kamuning was being renovated in the mid nineties, we lived for two years in Capitol Homes just a bit across Commonwealth Avenue from Philam.
I would go to mass there sometimes because Kamuning is a bit far.
Wow, thanks for the tips… really wonderful. I’ll try out Billy’s when I go home. And I think that’s also where my Mom buys the lumpia wrappers.
But hey… you really know a lot. Maybe when I go home, I’d ask Ara Mina to bring me around Kamuning Market.
When I was very young I remember my Mom working in Kamuning as a dressmaker. I forgot the name of the boutique ! We used to live in Manalo Street, Quezon City and later on moved to Project 8. We used to go to Araneta every Sunday to attend mass after we used to go straight to….ooppsss I forgot the name of that place huuuh isip isip yung maraming rides like carousel etc !! I did my kindergarten in Trinity College so I can still remember Kamuning
but not much familiar like you do !
ako ulit, I remember the place Fiesta Carnival ! Naku na miss ko na yon
!!!
With such clear directions I will find it easily… sounds like a nice place to discover !
kaka enganyo pumunta ng kamuning market. hindi ko pa napupuntahan ng area na ito. hanggang EDSA Kamuning crossing pa lang. hehehe…
Hi Toe,
I think you were pertaining to Filinvest rather than Philam. Philam dun po ako kinasal. I also like that place, a quiet subdivision in between the busy streets of EDSA and WestAve.
Haze, oh how cool is that? Your Mom used to be a dressmaker in Kamuning… the dressmakers there are the best. Yes, that’s Fiesta Carnival in Cubao. My parents used to bring my siblings there… but I think before I was born. We used to a lot to Ali Mall across the street though and buy books from Bookmark.
Kent, his siblings, my sisters, and I went to Elementary in St. Joseph’s College – the school beside Trinity.
Sidney, oh I’m sure you’d enjoy taking photos there.
It’s going to be hot though.
Dong Ho, maghanda ka… parang probinsiya talaga don
Kent, oo nga… Kongkong622 is from Philam West Avenue and not Philam Commonwealth.
I got confused. But I did mean Philam Commonwealth (where Reggie, the violinist used to live) and not Filinvest.
That’s still much farther away after Ever Gotesco.
Dun ka pala kinasal.
Wow I didn’t know that people wrote to you via email asking for your advice.
Advice columnist ka din pala aside from a well informed blogger.
I would be completely lost in Q.C. totally not familiar with the area.
Well I wished I could relate on this post but since I havent been there yet though the place as you have described sounds interesting.
di rin ako masyadong makarelate dahil basta directions sa QC, tumutupi na ang buntot ko. Morato lang ang alam ko sa QC!!!! hehehe
pero interesting yung Kamuning Bakery, sana merong isang food blogger ang makapasyal dun and share the news to the world.
I’ve never been there…I went to the more famous bargain market….except the name eludes me now. It was very crowded, but fun to visit.
Like Daphne says, maybe you should have a “Dear Toe” post every once in a while. You can even give relationship advice, not just directions to places. hehehe
I think downtown baguio has something like Kamuning market — tailors, wet markets, etc. I got my elementary school uniforms done there.
It’s been years since I went to Kamuning to visit a friend. I bet the place has changed a lot sep with that bargain market you talked about. Your directions will certainly help me find the place now that I am a stranger in Metro Manila hehehe
Daphne, hey being an advice columnist sounds like fun.
I wish more people would write letters to me.
Quezon City is changing fast. Even I get lost there every time I go home.
Chase Ravndal, the place is just like a province though it’s in the middle of Quezon City.
Zherwin, Kamuning Road is about five blocks parallel to Tomas Morato. Laking Tomas Morato and Timog din kami.
Shucks… I have to admit though I used to eat Kamuning Bakery pandesal everyday in Manila, I’ve never been in there.
Shoshana, maybe Nepa-Q-Mart?
Wil, hahahaha… actually, I have a “Dear Toe” draft already… pero panay fictitious letter writers… on courtship, dating, romance…
I ought to bring you to Kamuning and you could bring me to Baguio.
BW, oh Kamuning Market has been there forever. But yes… the place is changing so fast… I get lost there every time I go home.
So many new restaurants, shops… and you know what’s mushrooming everywhere? Badminton courts.
That’s interesting, I was in Kamunig the other day
Cheers!
Eric, oh quite a coincidence then!
I haven’t been to Kamuning market. But my sister who lived in Scout Gandia used to get great and cheap puto the size of a plate from there.
I also have a province I love so much .. Gagalangin, Tondo. I should write about it one of these days.
Annamanila, Scout Gandia is very near our street which is also a Scout. I’m afraid I’ve never tried the puto there though. Shhesh for me!
Would love to read about Gagalangin… ayan, blog ka na ulit.
I grew up in Kamuning and went to Kamuning Elementary School. I actually live at K-7th. K-7th is the street before K-8th which is the street before the creek. When I was little and asked where K-7th is, we’d say “sa tabing ilog.” We’re actually very close to Kamuning Market and the Kamuning Center. I just returned from my visit to the Philippines last month and passed by Kamuning Market, kaya lang hindi ako bumaba to shop. That was something I missed. It’s always nice to go there dahil ang mumura ng bilihin. I agree, the telahan is the cheapest there. Before I left, I told my sister to buy me some fabrics and have it sent to the tailor there, and I think she did mention Billys. That’s good to know.
Oh, I remember the Queens Market. That is funny. When I stopped by Kamuning Road cor K-B, I was looking for the Magnolia house sa corner. This is where we would hang out after class when we were at Quezon City High School. It’s nice to read the Kamuning trivia. Brought a lot of memories. But I wonder if some people remember “Turing”? Ha-ha.
Hi Ruth. It’s nice to know some people who live in Kamuning.
Some of my choirmates must have been your neighbors. Yes, I also used to eat at the Magnolia House… sayang… matagal na nawala ‘yon.
Hello, Toe,
Wow, tubong Kamuning din ako…couldn’t believe there is an actual blog to join in and reminisce the good ‘ol days in my beloved neighborhood!
Well, I KNOW Kamuning market; we used to own four grocery stores before most of you were born, I’m assuming (that is if you are not baby boomers like moi!). If you are not BBs, ask your mom and dad if they remember “Square Deal”, Fair Deal” and “Endeno’s Stores in front of the “palengke in K-5th. My late dad took the names either from Roosevelt or Truman’s economic policies at that time. We used to be a NAMARCO distributors and would allocate imported grocery items to many retailers. I would help display most sought after items like “imported’ apples and grapes, and “anchor’ butter, much to the envy of my playmates! There was a movie that was filmed around one of our stores and it starred Armando Goyena and my late dad had a cameo role as a…store owner, what else?!
Going back even earlier on, I remember living in a big house in Kamuning Road right before Delgado Clinic when a few houses were still occupied by American families whose fathers may have been assigned in JUSMAG nearby. My parents converted the front part of our place into a dress shop.
We moved to K-5th when I was 6 and our next door neighbor was a top Premiere Studios’ movie director, Mr. Teodorico C. S. I remember scaling our fence to get a glimpse of Leopoldo Salcedo, Edna Luna, Alicia Vergel, Cesar Ramirez,et al whenever they would visit their director. The director’s only son at that time met a tragic accident when he drowned while swimming at his U.S.T freshman high school P.E. class. Mr. C.S. had to fly back in a hurry from Paris where he was filming “Pitong Gabi sa Paris”. My parents attended the wake at their spacious living room and I remember bumping into a your Fernando Poe Jr. up the stairway to the master’s bedroom where Mr. C.S. was being treated for a possible heart condition.
K-5th was still quite ‘posh” at that time. My dad used to take me and my brother to “Happy Valley” public swimming pool and we would just cross the wooden bridge over the creek (sapa) between K-8th and Espana Ext. I remember our right side neighbor were tisoys from Zamboanga and would speak ‘chabacano” even to their maids. The daughter “Rosie” was a member of the FEU Dance Troupe, the strongest competition for the “Bayanihan” and she would regale us kids with stories of her world travels and performances. I had the biggest crush on her kid brother, “Tuting”…I wonder where he is now, LOL! Then there was the other family who lived in the blue house with very high fence. According to one of our salesgirls who quit her job from that household as a maid due to alleged maltreatment, the matriach was germphobic, wearing gloves even when handling food packages! One day, the police came and arrested her for alleged materminding the murder of a paramour who happend to be their family driver. Tabloids carried her picture and that of her son trying to cover her face during the court hearing. Neigbors never found out the ending of this salacious story, except that the alleged killer was one of the “mataderos” from the palengke.
There was this grocery store right at the rotonda by Timog Avenue and Kamuning Road owned by the mom of a pop band members called “Bits and Pieces” mala Beatles!
The bakery that I remember was in K-A called Sabang’s Bakery; their pan de sal was to die for. I remember Vermont dry store near Kamuning Hardware. The owner’s daughter became my schoolmate in Stella Maris College during grade school years. The most popular textile store in the market was owned by “Aling” Amanda and we would see movie stars like Josephine Estrada shop for frabrics, etc. The other bakery was in K-C, near the Kamuning Theater. We used to get movie passes because the theater operators used to post the “Now Showing’” announcements by our garage door facing the palengke!
I had my first Holy Communion at the Sacred Heart Church and I remember we would usually attend Sunday Masses there or over at “Christ the King” in Espana Blvd. I attended first to fourth grade in Kamuning Elementary School’s classrooms in K-C, then tranferred to the main campus in fifth grade before transferring to a private school on my 6th grade.
After the devastating flood in May 1958, things were never the same in Kamuning. Between the late 60s’ and early 70s’, my parents built an 8-door apartment at the back of our house in K-6th and after both of them passed away, my brother sold the property. I left for the States in mid 1980.
I went back to visit in 1990 and felt so lost; one can never bring back the speldour of the grass”…
“Diding” of Kamuning
Hello, Ruth,
Are you referring to the mentally challenged “Turing” who used to be a kargador in Kamuning market? If you are, well, let me tell you what I remember of him. His mother was Kamuning market’s most notorious alcoholic, always starting the day with a bottle of sioktong at Mrs. O. ’s store, which was located at the back of ours. Urban myth has it that he was released from the mental institution in Mandaluyong but it was obvious that he was that far from being completely all together there. He used to iron his hard earned paper money into crispy bills and neatly stash them away inside this thick, tattered wallet, only to every now and then wake up with a slashed back pocket. At first, he would salvage discarded food items from the basurahan; however, he eventually learned that he could buy clean meals at any karenderiya like “Aling Meding’s’. He had the tiniest waist, drawing his belt so tight; no wonder he could carry those heavy “kaings”, and other crates. Whatever happened to this poor fella, I wonder!
Hi Diding!
Sorry for the late reply. Wow, your stories about Kamuning are just precious. Boy, K-5th was posh at that time? I don’t know when my Dad’s family moved there… maybe in the 50s. I have to ask him that story. They used to squat right on Kamuning Road but eventually owned a house there. I have to ask him about your grocery stores and all. Thanks for your stories. They are a joy to read.
Hi!
I am a Kamuning Elementary School and Quezon City High School graduate…
I enjoyed reading all the comments and remenissing the good old days.
Considering I am one of the “poorest” student during those days.
The principal was then Mrs. Raquel (elementary)
High School was Mrs. Dela Cruz.
With all hardworks and help of a missionary couple I was able to finish my 2 years in college…and now am working in California (United Airlines). God is really good.
Eden Zuniga (I grew up in Scout Tuason used to be South F) near Sampaloc Avenue and Max restaurant.
Hi, Eden,
So am I, attended KEs for 5 years, but transferred to a private school and then UP. Do you reside in Southern CA like me? Are you related to Zorro Zuniga who used to live in K-4th?

Reading on the latest comments i really like seeing the ‘old stories’ of kamuning. Masaya po syang basahin lalo na ang mga post ni Mam Norma. Just a fair share of celebrities who lived in Kamuning is our neighbor in K-1st in the 80s era. Mr. George Canseco was one of the sought after composer at that time and during fiesta or any occasion at their house napupuno ng artista ang kanyang bahay. My sisters would have more vivid memories on this one. naka pag papirma pa ata sila kay Sharon Cuneta.. hehehe. Uzi lang ako nun.
Oh my gosh, i have so many memories of kamuning. We used to live in the corner of K-2nd and judge jimenez, i’m not sure iif anyone could remember that tall building there with a balcony. We use to put different colored bulbs there during christmas. Kamuning bakery is my favorite place to get my chocolate cupcakes, pulvoron and specially that pandesal. yummmmm!! And do you guys remember that burger machine there. We used to eat there too. I love that roast beef they had. So many great memories there. I Haven’t been there in like 10 years, i wonder if my grandmas house still there.
Hi, Kintoy and Lei:
I’ve just forwarded our host my very own blog site re: Kamuning. Sa totoo lang, I really don’t know how to forward the posting directly, LOL!

nag taka nga aq kung bkit kami nilagay sa tabi ng kainan dun hhaha….. un lang muna ala p aq maiisp e.. xka sori kung magulo e2 kc d aq marunong s mga gan2 lalo na sosyalan..
wow, sobrang i’ve learned a lot from you guys.
will go to kamuning market to have my uniform made
thanks thanks.
reading your blog made me smile. sa kamuning ako nakatira till grade 6. went to kamuning elementary school. we lived at dr. lazcano tapat lang ng KASO, wala pa dating bakod between QCHS & KES. kamuning will always be one of my hometowns. i’m glad i’ve managed to keep in touch with chidlhood friends from kamuning. sana makita ko pa ibang friends & classmates… one of these days i plan to visit kahit pass by lang… kamuning is synonymous to my childhood… cheers everyone!
KAMUNING – named after a tree tomas morato ave. formerly SAMPALOC AVE. kasi maraming puno ng sampalok miski na matataas inaakyat namin nuon dati residential area ngayon gimikan na. edsa dati HI-WAY 54. Ang kamuning lapit lang sa GMA ch. 7 at ABS-CBN ch. 2 kaya mga tao dito magkaka pamilya na magkakapuso pa. Mga streets dito K-A (LUIS SIANGHIO) K-B (T. GENER) K-C( JUDGE JIMENEZ) K-D (ERESTAIN) K-E K-F K-G (ala pa mga new name). KAM. ROAD) school na sya ngayon. Syempre dito pa rin KES- Kamuning Elem. School at QCHS Quezon City High School. Lastly mas maganda na ang SACRED HEARTH OF JESUS PARISH CHURCH.
Hi again Toe, I was wondering if you happen to be a member of a choir in sacred heart during the late 70’s or early 80’s because i was a member of the alagad (altar boys) where in fr. resty was the parish priest and nelson is the head of the alagad or rather he was the one taking care of the things the priest going to use for the mass. and zaldy was the replament when nelson was away.
I did my elementary in KES, and after that i go to trinity college for secondary and the rest of my classmate go to qchs. It was nice really nice to remember the places where we use to go in fact we had some alagad members who use to live also in scout st near the church. But for me i grew up in Kamuning road between the K-C and K-D near the clinic, and carburator shop.
where all the kids around there used to play on the street, especially night time.
Kamuning market used to be my pasyalan at that time because my lolo used to have a store in from of the market in the big building at that time and always see mang turing who use to have a lot of coins in his waist. whenever people asked for his assistance he ask for a fee and he only accept coins, because coins is real money while paper bill could be fake. And also remember that puto was located on the first gate from the basketball court and the 2nd gate is where the veggy is located on the entrance all the way to fish and meat section, on the 3rd gate is where the kutkutin section for the kids and tindahan ng mga damit all the way near the ilog.
so its good to remember kamuning at yung bahay ni m. soriano is just beside kaso, do you remember juan na nagtitinda ng tuba sa may tabing gilid ng qchs?
so i guess stop muna ako dito if you happen to have time to answer my comment i do appriciate.

My mother and I left for California in mid 1980 and I didn’t see Kamuning again until early 1990. I was shocked by so many changes, sadly for the worse, of the town. My brother finally sold our house (and the 8-door apartment units behind) in K-6th in late 1992, almost 2 years after our father passed away. It was bought by one of our former tenants, and in 2005, I took my 2 kids back there for a sentimental visit. There were still many former neighbors’ younger families who were there; the Pototanas, Aguinaldos, Agustins, Nadoras, etc. In Kamuning Road, the Delgado Clinic was still there, but I can’t recall if the movie house was still there. The only memory I have of Sacred Heart church is two houses nearby that belonged to the Villaricas; Leticia V. was my classmate in Grade 5 at KES under (Ms. Manlapas ?) before I transferred to Stella Maris College, and Rosemarie V., who was my school busmate the following year. As long as our former tenants own that house on K-6th, i guess i could always go back to see the place that I lived for so many years, although not continuously! for those whom I’ve met/known in Kamuning, feel free to visit my FB site under my e mail address.
God bless.
Masarap talaga ang bread sa kamuning, grabe…. sana ma try nyo din…..
Hi Toe, tripped over your blog as i was searching for directions on how to go to Kamuning market. read an article in a mag that there are so many good finds i there. Im a tubong Pasay and totally clueless about Qc. But 5 years ago I transferred work here and last year my husby and I decided to permanently make QC our hometown. But you know, aside from morato, mindanao ave and trinoma I dont know anything more about QC. Thanks for the very detailed and (more) information on how to get there
Was able to read some of your entries also and i find it very amusing.
Fits of nostalgia ! all my 55 years were spent in kamuning and the nearby “scout” area. toe, i learned we were neighbors at scout thru my nephew & your choirmate, arnold. We left k4th in 1967 and transferred to a house where you & i became neighbors. Me and my wife, mariedel, who also lived in k4th, were members of MUY, the orig jazz mass choir of sacred heart parish. the famous nonoy zuniga was also with us not as the frontline singer but as the guitarist. i became a member not because of my voice qualities but as a stalker of my future wife. she is now deceased. our daughter, tuesday, also did time with the choir. i have some personal knowledge to input for some of your bloggers, like the name of ms.cummins’ crush, or ….next time na lang ha !!!!!
Anyone who can help me with the below information I will be forever grateful!
1. What was the name of the old movie theater (defunct) on the corner of Judge Jimenez and Kamuning Road? I remember watching Ramon Zamora movies there including Sprakenhayt (correct my spelling) and Pedro Penduko.
2. Does anybody have a picture of the NUTRI-BUN truck that delivers NUTRI-BUN to the Tomas Morato Elementary School? Do you also have a picture of a NUTRI-BUN?
3. Does anyone have a picture of the formerly wood and bamboo bridge that started from the tip of K-B and K-8th Streets and connects Kamuning to E. Rodriguez Ave. going towards Happy Valley? This bridge is now passable by all vehicles after it was replaced by a concrete bridge. But when I was a kid in late 60’s and early 70’s this was passable only by pedestrians and under the bridge was the sapa with dirty water flowing from Kamuning Market and goes up to Bernardo Park in Cubao.
Thanks for reading my post and hopefully someone replies. Di ako makatulog eh

Iam from K-6th…… remember the health center where abig santol tree was and at the back a big sampaloc tree giving some shades at the basketball court…we used to do our laundry at the sapa going to happy valley…. I remember Turing the kargador….we play cara cruz at the side door of the health center,,,, I am a member of the Globe basketball our coach is the husband of mrs. Antonio who owns the house at the corner of K-B and K-5 where ther is the barber shop… I remember mang ramon esperida of the square deal store who become my ninong sa kasal. ang magkakarne sa palengke si tangkad tasan, aling amanda at ang kaibigan kong si Teodoro Brozo Jr na asawa ni Lusing na anak ni aling amanda ng K-5……
isa sa mga original 1939 residents ng kamuning ang family ng mama ko. the one quality the original residents had in common was that their head of family were government employees. kamuning could be considered the country’s Project Zero of government housing projects because it was a housing project for government workers. my mother’s (lourdes encarnacion landicho) father (pedro bihis landicho) my lolo, was a librarian in the malacanang library.
the first catholic mass in kamuning was a christmas eve mass held on the banks of the creek where the kamuning public market now is. tabing sapa. the priest was from the christ the king mission seminary of the society of the divine word (svd).
most of my mother’s sublings and lolo pedring and lola loleng migrated to toronto canada in the 1970s and 1980s. there is a kamuning residents association in canada now and they are active members of it. my lolo died there in canada many years ago. vehicular accident.
kamuning is also famous for its blessed parish, sacred heart of jesus – kamuning. my aunts and uncles were active parish volunteers in their younger days, and when it was my turn, i volunteered too. i was, for seven years, the communications ministry coordinator. now i am with the ppcrv (parish pastoral council for responsible voting).
i remember ‘mang turing’, the scavenger who lingers around kamuning. my mother often gave him food when he passed along k-3rd street.
kamuning public market is well-known for its textile section near the park avenue end of the market compound. people from near and far go to the textile section for their telas and patahi.
kamuning is also known for the montoya family’s empanada and pancit palabok. the montoya compound today has its k-3rd side and k-2nd side aling lucing’s husband died some months ago.
kamuning is also known for the many printing press and catering businesses that have sprung up there over the years.
today, kamuning’s judge jimenez street is becoming a restaurant row because of nato’s, snackaroo and vitan’s.
the kamuning bakery is still there at the corner of jimenez and k-1st. i go there for my servings of cinnamon bread and hard monay.
kamuning now has a population of about 17,000. the new barangay chairman is jayson encomienda.
Yes, the Landicho surname sounds soooo familiar when my parents were still in Kamuning!
Maxie, its great to know that my late father was your wedding ninong, wow! I remember him as managing a basketball team with a certain “Mario” as the center. Was Aling Amanda’s last name “Barba”? If so, 2 of her sons rented our former apartment in K-6th; it was the widow of one of them actually who occupied the second floor unit (Aling Priming?) and Mang Oscar was at the ground floor’s last unit.
Hi, Harry Talusan! I’m curious about what info you have about Rafael “Tuting” Escobar. The last time I saw him was during his late dad’s funeral when I was still in high school, I think. His eldest sister, Lily used to run a snack/gift store in front of thier house in K-5th called “PDS” store, after her kids, Philip, Dennis and Susan. I found out from former neighbors that one of her kids had a fatal accident when they where in Canada.
Does anyone remember the De Dios family?
to norma esperida. please be sensitive. nobody wants to be reminded bout fatal accidents. while they would like to be move on remember about the good memories. posting on the internet about someone’s death to someone’s community is not helping.
To Mr./Ms. “Positive”:
My sincere apology; you are right, though my intention was merely to reminisce, I should have been more considerate of other people’s level of sensibility.
Back to positive postings then! Does anyone know the what happened to a popular optometrist Dr. Perez, who had a clinic in K-5th, just across the market?
tonnette..i’m jc…i’m a civil engineering student and my group is tasked to suggest a waste water treatment plan for kamuning public market…i was particularly tasked to write a letter to the barangay regarding the project…kanino o sa anong office ko ba dapat i-address yung letter?salamat
