Back to Sihanoukville
Whenever Honey and I would go to Sihanoukville, Cambodia’s “beach town,” for our regular honeymoon, we would usually go to Sokha Hotel (we get a really chunky discount) where we would enjoy luxurious facilities and a kilometer-long private beach reserved only for the hotel’s guests (see this post):
But now, with the depreciation of the dollar, we had to tighten our belts, and had to go to Occheutal Beach which is a public beach. Like Sokha Beach, Occheuteal is also beautiful but crowded with tourists, backpackers, beggars, and the bane of them – all vendors… trying to sell me fruits, durian, shorts, beach apparel, goggles, massages, manicures… an island, and God knows what.
I still enjoyed myself, I guess. After all, if the kids of our staff (see photo above) all enjoyed themselves… why not me? So there I was, sitting on a cot under a big umbrella which we rented for $2 for the day. As long as I closed my nose to the smell of cow manure in the field behind me, and shut my eyes to the litter beside me (and the fat men in skimpy Speedos), I was okay. I was armed with my book of Sudoku, my Alphasmart Neo, and of course, Honey snoring peacefully beside me.
And hey… what can I say about the milkshakes and the freshest seafood in the beachfront bars… just check this out.

Milkshakes and seafoods? Aren’t they a weird combination?
hey, your public beach there is still not as crowded as the ones here in Thailand! and the beach chairs look more comfy too!
cows at the beach??!
Public ba yan? Malinis naman sya ah.
huwaw mukhang napakasarap nung pagkain niyo ha
gusto ko na rin mag beach!!
Backpackers and beggars? Aren’t they a weird combination?
hi! i’ve been reading your blog regularly since last year and I find it a really great read. I’m a Filipina married to a Chinese-Cambodian and I’ve been there a couple of times. Come mid-2008 we’ll be moving there and I’ve been really apprehensive on how I can adopt to life there. your blog really helped me a lot in coming to terms with the changes I’ll be encountering when we move there…
two thumbs up for u Ms. Toe!
Snglguy, anokavaaaah? Hindi naman sabay yon e.
IA, yes, I’ve been to Pattaya during the Songkran… there were soooooooooo many people!
I’ve also been to Phuket right before the tsunami… it was so beautiful there.
There were some cows right behind the beach but I could still smell them.
Ann, yeah… it wasn’t bad… spoiled kc… Sokha was so beautiful kc e.
Carlotta, it was all very fresh of course.
And it was great eating just right at the beach.
Sidney, really many beggars there begging from backpackers and tourists. May blog about it soon.
Hi Lui! I really appreciate your nice words.
It’s not difficult to adjust here… climate is the same as the Philippines, Filipino food is availabe, and we have the Filipino Channel. I don’t let the Filipinos here know that I have a blog though.
But you won’t have a difficult time… most Pinoys really love it here… and you’re married pa to a Cambodian… so don’t worry.
But summer is fast approaching. Wish ko lang makapag beach din kami at sana by that time wala na akong belt bag hehehe
Verns, I think you’re looking at the photos of the private beach… mas maraming tao don sa public.
Hehe… ako nga yon. As for my belt bag… I’ve had it since I was two years old.
Lapit na nga mag-summer!!!!
Ang ganda naman dyan. Anubayan, I want to go to Cambodia!! Parang ganun lang eh
Seriously, the beach looks fantastic. Is that anywhere near the temples of Angkor? Kasi, forever ko ng plano ang pumunta sa Angkor. Gusto ko kasing mag-feeling Angelina kahit sandali lang
Kongkong622, it’s quite far. Siem Reap, the town where the temples are, is about more than 400 km. north of Phnom Penh, the capital. Sihanoukville, on the other hand, is more than 400 km. south of Phnom Penh. Yeah… you should visit Siem Reap… definitely, one of the must-go-to-place-before-you-die.
ang ganda naman ng buhangin! kakagaling ko pa lang sa beach eto nangangati na naman ang mga paa ko hehehe.
on belt bag, wag na lang huminga kapag pipicturan hehehe.
