Mommy in Phnom Penh
After the amigas left Phnom Penh for Hanoi, Vietnam, for the last leg of their tour, Mom was left behind to stay with us in our apartment for a week. Like a true dutiful daughter, I put her to work right away.
First, I gave her a pile of clothes for her to repair. For someone whose mother sews really well (she made all her daughters dressing gowns), I’m quite ashamed to admit that I can’t even sew a button. So to work she went sewing buttons, putting on garters, cutting off pants which are too long, patching up holes, etc. Then, she also wrapped all our Christmas gifts and helped with the few Christmas decorations we had at home.
In return, Honey was a true model son-in-law and cooked for her all her favorite food.
Haaaay, I guess that I am no longer officially Mom’s favorite.
I think Mom stayed with us to be Dad’s spy… you know… to make sure that we’re doing fine in Cambodia (not doing kalokohan and stuff).
So I brought her along to choir practice… glared at the Koro Filipino (”That’s my Mom, say good morning to her. Sing well, she’s a music major”). I introduced her to other diplomats whom we seemed to be bumping into everywhere… Toul Tompong, the supermarket, etc. And I even brought her to a Christmas party at one ambassador’s residence (she got a personal invitation, hehe!). Of course, in true francophile fashion, we brought her to a snooty French restaurant.
So there, I hope she gave Dad a good report and that we got sterling marks.
Here’s to a wonderful blogging 2008 to all of you!

I’m sure you both got high scores for being such accommodating hosts to your beloved mother
how i wish my mom will also visit us here. but then again, i always makeit a point to visit her dyan lang naman sa laguna
Lucky you, having mom around to for moral and household support
Looks like she had a ton of fun so be prepared for Dad to come around next time
How lucky you are naman, to have a mom mending clothes for you.
My mom also used to sew. I’m not a good sewer too. I don’t know how to use the sewing machine. When I had projects in Home Economics that needed sewing, my mom did them for me. Then I’d just pretend to be putting finishing stitches in school. hehehe.
Wishing you and your loved ones the Best of the New Year, Toe!
I bet you’d be spending more time in your parents house for your “other” needs when you come home, hehe. Just kidding, toe… Here’s to another great blogging year.
Ano ba yan! Hindi ka marunong magtahi ng butones? Tuturuan kita kung payag ka!
Daphne, I hope so, I think we bribed her enough and Honey was THE model son-in-law.
Tutubi, oh that’s why you’re in Laguna pala.
Yeah, it’s nice to have parents visiting from time to time (not always though).
BW, I don’t think that’s going to happen anymore… we’re going back to the Philippines in July.
Rhodora, pareho tayo… my Mom used to do all my sewing projects too… hahaha! I was really bad at it. Happy New Year Rhodora!
Snglguy, you bet… we need to go there for laundry, food… in fact, we’d probably stay there for a few months because our home probably wouldn’t be ready yet when we get home.
LIW, both my Mom and my Honey tried… ewan ko ba… I’m a real klutz, I ended up hurting my fingers with the scissors.
We have something in common again Toe , our honeys have the same name
! I am from Quezon and he is too ! Now, your Mom is a sewer and my Mom is a dressmaker too ! She made all our dresses when we were kids but unfortunately I hate wearing skirts
I always say goodbyes to paldas and bestidas ! Pero teka I know how to make a simple skirts naman, repair buttons, make patches and cutting pants but I cannot sing like you do
panalo ka ng 5 paligo…LOL !
before you know it, your dad and his kumpadres are there visiting you guys hehe
nice to know you had fun!
oo nga, baka with the good report by your mom, it will be your dad’s turn naman. abangan…
Haze, haha… we have a lot of things in common pala. I also hate wearing skirts… until now… I’m in slacks in the office almost everyday.
Hey, how did you know my husband’s name? I’ll teach you how to sing.
Carlotta, oh no… my Dad can’t repair clothes either.
I don’t think Dad could travel without Mom.
Zherwin, don’t give him any ideas.
nanay ko walang alam na gawaing bahay. yun lang. pag bibisita sya ratatatatatat maririnig ko. nakakamis yun. pero for one day lang. tapos ayoko na.
Duke, Happy New Year!
Hahaha… nakakatuwa nanay mo… naalala ko kwento mo about the second rate copycat.
napakabait mo naman. binigyan agad ng trabaho ang mommy, hehehe! pero gusto naman nila yun. they feel that they are much needed that way. my mother still repairs my clothes. parang lahat ata ng nanay magaling manahi. siguro eventually we will learn. di ko lang din alam. i know how to sew pero hindi kasing pulido ng nanay ko. so inuulit n’ya pa mga ginagawa ko. doble trabaho tuloy. it’s nice to know that you brought your moms to these occasions. i am sure she enjoyed it. mukhang masarap talaga magluto si Honey mo. picture pa lang naglalaway na ako.
In your mom’s place, I would have given you meritissimus. But your honey deserves higher than highest distinction.
you’re lucky–you had your mom for another week. am sure she enjoyed her stay, sewing, repairing clothes, cooking, socializing and all. i, too, have a om who stays with me, takes care of all the domesticities, and who my kids treat as their other mom.
just like your mom, i spent some time with my daughter in the dorm hemming her long pants. then, when i was about done, she found another one to sew button on.
i like the look of those food that your honey cooked for your mom. he probably ranks number 1 to your parents as far as in-laws are concerned.
Annamanila, hehe… yeah… he is sipsip, isn’t he?
Sexy Mom, your mother is just like my Lola. She used to live with us too and she was also like our other mom.
Belle, your daughter and I are kindred spirits.
Naku, don’t let my other brothers-in-law read your comment.
hi, toe! what a mom! she seems to be a person with a happy disposition.
Bingskee, yes, she’s always jolly and cheerful.
