The Mendoza Girls
I found this photo while rummaging through the pictures Mom sent me. It was the summer of 1983 (well, summer in the Philippines, spring in North America). And this was taken in Elizabeth Park, in Vancouver, Canada.
From left: Sixter, Sis Bride (except that it has been almost a year since her wedding), and Sis New Hamster. With their puffy hair and baggy colored pants, they’re called the Charlie’s Angels, este the Mendoza Girls. Except that people always seem to forget that there is another Mendoza Girl… ahhhhrrrrrmmm…. that’s me. I’m like Effie (starring Jennifer Hudson) in Dreamgirls. People forget that I’m a girl… este, a Mendoza Girl.
And in the summer of 1983, Dad sent the Mendoza Girls (yes, right… without me) to a tour of States and Canada (well, wherever we had relatives in whose houses they could camp out in). And they took the photo above to torment me. In a wrathful fit of righteous sisterly vengeance (and I say wrathful, righteous, and vengeance with much affection), since I was left alone in the room in Kamuning which the four of us shared that summer, I wore all the clothes they left behind. Mwahahahahahahahaha! I figured that I was going to inherit them someday anyway since as the youngest of six, I only get to wear hand-me-downs that have been used and abused by five other people.
Anyway, the summer after that, Dad sent me and my two evil big brothers to the States as well (and I say evil with much affection). So what are we now, the Mendoza Boys?
Hehehe… I get my final vengeance by publishing that photo above.
(And I say vengeance with much affection).
Oh btw, you can see a photo of us four sisters here – yes, now we’ve grown up, Big Sisses are now acknowledging me.

i used to wear hand-me-downs from my older bro na mga tshirt. ang pinakapaborito ko ay yung white shirt na me malaking picture ni bart simpson
pmabahay na lang yun ngayon.
did your dad also send you to the states the summer after your brothers did?
hey Mendoza Boy este girl hehe
I don’t remember my younger sister wearing hand-me-down clothes but I can remember her wearing my pjs. Now she also wears my jackets…
Another trip down memory lane… You have a funny way of recollecting events that I’m confusing evil with tenderness. hehe…
Anyway, this photo begs to be restored, Toe. So i made a 3-minute action to it here:

Ha ha! Mom made our pants and jackets kaya mukha kaming naka-uniform
Our hands were all in our pockets kasi malamig pala doon. That was a fun trip. Oh btw you couldn’t use my hand-me-downs dahil… ahem… magkaiba tayo ng size.
priceless photos for revenge? lol. of course it’s a sweet, loving one.
I bet you had a whale of a time showing off your new wardrobe collection while they were gone
Being with the boys was probably better.. at least you have 2 bodyguards to take care of you hehe
I noticed they even wrote something at the top left portion of the picture. And I can make out the word, Vancouver… Talagang pinainggit ka ka ano?
toe, you are so funny! my daughters also abuse my clothes. kaya tuloy sometimes, i don’t want to wear my clothes after they wear it several times.
those pictures of the sisters are so cute but can’t figure out who is who.
Baggy and coloured trousers, those were the days eh, he he
I sometimes wonder how it feels to have a sister close to my age (I’ve got a sister old enough to be my daughter and while she was growing up, I’m away); must be fun
that picture is priceless…
Kaka-aliw itong story mo toe! Hahaha.
I’m sure matatawa mga kapatid mo when they read this story.
Carlotta, eksakto… uso si Bart Simpson ngayon.
Yes, I went with the boys the year after… I think my Dad considered me as one of the boys.
Verns, lucky sister… I didn’t have much choice. My parents wouldn’t buy me clothes… just let me wear hand-me-downs.
Rayts, hahaha… same with me and my sister… so I ended up wearing ill-fitting clothes.
Oh, thanks Rey! I just replaced the photo with the one you fixed up.
Appreciate it!
Sixter, akala ko, nagpapakasiga kayo… your hands were cold pala.
Ipanema… hahaha… that’s the power of the blog… you can get back at brothers and sisters by posting their old photos.
BW, my brothers were mostly tormenting me the whole time.
We didn’t do girlie stuff either like shopping… we just did a lot of fast-walking.
Snglguy, I should have drawn horns on their heads.
Belle… oh, so cool… sharing clothes with your daughters. That means they think you have good taste.
Pining, naku, we’re the same… my three sisters are all almost the same age… ako lang yung mejo napalayo sa age so I was always with my brothers.
Ladybug, I’m actually hiding from them now… hahaha!
He,he… old sweet memories…
Ang tatanda na ng mga Mendoza sisters ko. Ang tataba pa, except one, ang payat.
This post and picture made me smile, with the affection almost tangible. Though I fail to see why you are being bunched with the boys … my remembrance of my first EB ever was of a very feminine-looking smiling young lady.
Ay, naalala ko tuloy ang Ate ko. We are three sisters in the family … dalawa na lang kami ngayon.
I keep telling my surviving sister to watch herself (she’s prone to overweight and HBP.) I can’t live without a sister!
Sidney, haha… except that the memories weren’t mine because I got left behind.
Mommy, yeah, I’m thin.
Annamanila, I think it’s because my sisters are older. They left home to get married and be on their own first too. So, I was left in the family house with my brothers for quite some time. So I was really one of the boys.
You must be very close with your sisters.
with musc affection i should say na maganda ang mga bulaklak sa likod nila, hehehe. jpoke. they really look very cool!
with much affection i should say na maganda ang mga bulaklak sa likod nila, hehehe. joke. they really look very cool! (sorry for the typo, madilim dito) hehe
I love to wear over used clothes, it’s very comfortable
! Kahit butas butas na type ko pa rin pero sa bahay lang ha
! I like your haircut, I used to have siete hairstyle too hehehehe ! Great smile kabihag-bihag ***smugging****
We are very attached to each other. I remember when my sister had a very very serious problem and we went to see a psychic. Right off the bat, the seer told my sister: “You, you don’t have a problem. That one (pointing to me) … she’s the one who carries it.”
naku…what a revenge! Pinag praktisan mo pala mga damig ng mga sisters mo hehehe. I got hand-me-downs from my aunt (only 10yrs older)
i have not worn any hand-me-downs since i am the eldest and i can’t hand my clothes down to anyone either since i don’t have a sister.
at least your dad was fair for not missing out on any of his children.
I’m surprised that you didn’t superimpose your image right beside them para lahat ng mendoza girls are there.
Napadaan lang po to say hi miss toeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
Nice ’80s clothes! hehe. I think those jacket sleeves are supposed to be rolled up to the elbow though, like Don Johnson in Miami Vice. But I guess it was too cold in vancouver to roll up the sleeves.
lse by 3’s ang pagtravel. and siguro they’re expecting a boy as bunso para 3 boys and 3 girls. so boy ka sa kanila. hehe ;p
Ahh! Ikaw pala yung 4th dreamgirl. hehehe
Pag titignan mo yung fashion nila noon nakakatuwa ano. But it was so in at that time.
Revenge (my siblings and I would say “revenge of the pork and beans” … no special meaning except that they rhyme)! This post is funny, Toe.
Iskoo, haha… yeah, at least yung bulaklak, hindi naka-siete.
Haze, I’m not in the photo… only my sisters.
Problem is that… I never had new clothes as a child… big family kc so I only wore hand-me-downs.
Annamanila, ewan ko… but I’m amused with your story… parang alaskador yung manghuhula.
momoftwo, they were having a grand time in the States naman, while I was suffering in the scorching Manila heat.
Evi, yeah… I just don’t know why he’s putting me together with the boys.
Hi Mooooon!
Naku, may sungay yung photo ko kung naka-super-impose jan… doesn’t suit the flowers in the background.
Wil… yeah, and the collar should be unfolded upwards like Michael Jackson.
Tin-Tin, korekkajan… I think kaya kami dumami… trying to even out the number of boys and girls.
Ferdz, yeah, you’re right… I’m the 4th dreamgirl!
What a decade the 80s was!
Bugsybee, haha… I like that… revenge of the pork ‘n beans!
senti post ba itu? maghanap kaya ako ng old pics sa lumang baul?
Tutubi, naku eksakto… galing talaga ‘to sa lumang baul.
i dread seeing my pictures with “that” hair. yes, posting the picture is mighty vengeance, LOL
SexyMom, they didn’t know at that time that I would have a blog.
cute pictures of both before (maski wala ka) , and after! toe, we might finally meet face-to-face soon. rusty getting convinced about visiting cambodia…yehey! or maybe we’ll see each other at the family reunion?
Tina, oh, that is soooo coool!
Talo mo pa si Ate Adele and Ate Chinky… they’ve never been here. Just email me if you need any tips. You can stay with us here in Phnom Penh of course. In Siem Reap (where the Angkor Temples are located), we can recommend some good hotels.
