I remember when Sixter shoved me her copy of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone and commanded me to read it. Yeah, my older siblings (and there are five of them) do enjoy bullying me around. Like an obedient baby sister, I complied meekly. But from the moment when I read

Mr. and Mrs. Dursley, of number four, Privet Drive, were proud to say that they were perfectly normal, thank you verry much. They were the last people you’d expect to be involved in anything strange or mysterious, because they just didn’t hold with such nonsense.

(those were the first words of the first chapter), I was mesmerized and read the entire book from cover to cover so fast and so furiously that I hardly understood half of what I read. Sure, I get it that Voldemort was under Quirrel’s turban and Harry was victorious in retrieving the Sorcerer’s stone with a little help from his friends… but I missed a lot of the action… the excellent game of wizard chess Ron played, how Harry retrieved Neville’s remembrall, and so on.

So right after I finished the book, I immediately reread it… much slower this time… relishing Dumbledore’s few but absolutely delightful lines, imagined Hogwarts and its secret passages and magical paintings more vividly, and experienced blow-by-blow the action in the Quidditch games.

It was the same in every Harry Potter book after that. I was always too impatient to know if it was Malfoy who was Slytherin’s heir in The Chamber of Secrets, why Sirius Black wanted to attack Harry (but he did not) in The Prisoner of Azkaban, who would emerge victorious in the Triwizard Tournament in the Goblet of Fire, what was hidden in the Department of Mysteries in The Order of the Phoenix and what was the task assigned to Malfoy and who was the half-blood Prince in The Half-Blood Prince.

It’s only in the second reading that I could truly enjoy J.K. Rowling’s delightful dialogues, charming names, enchanting descriptions, suspenseful actions and so on. And as I mentioned in this post, everytime a new Harry Potter book comes out, I reread everything from the very first book. And J.K. Rowling never fails me… it gets better after each reading as I learn to love the characters and dwell vicariously in the wizarding world that the author created.

So for the past few weeks, in preparation for the seventh and last installment of the Harry Potter series, it has been total bliss for me reading a total of six fantastic Harry Potter books. I have been reading super slow, even aloud (until my voice gets hoarse), relishing the narration, the dialogue, the humor, the story, the style… even hoping that some of J.K. Rowling’s talent would rub off on me.

And now, most muggles have read Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, a lot of them on the same weekend the book came out, which was last week. And here I am, still trembling with anticipation as I wait for my own copy (compliments of Sixter… thanks sis!) who introduced me to Harry Potter in the first place. I have to wait a few more weeks when Honey would bring it all the way from Manila in mid-August.

Harry Potter fans out there must be wondering how I could endure the suspense. How could I sleep not knowing whether Severus Snape is good or bad, whether Dumbledore would do a Gandalf and resurrect himself, whether Harry would find all the horcruxes, whether Trelawney’s prophecy would come to pass?

Well, I’ll tell you how… spoiler! I’m a spoiler kind of gal anyway… not only in books but also on TV shows. I always want to be the first to know who gets eliminated in American Idol. If my manok gets booted out, I would bother to watch. It’s the same with Amazing Race. I refuse to watch the final if I knew that an annoying team would win.

And with the Deathly Hallows, if without the spoiler, I know that once I get hold of the book, I would be reading it as fast as a bullet train that I would have no idea what I read and miss thoroughly enjoying the book. But reading is so much more than knowing the ending of the story. Reading is getting to know the characters and living the story with your solitary self and reading super fast would definitely beat this purpose.

Plus, since the entire muggledom has read the book, not knowing is like being inflicted with the cruciatus curse.

So what’s my spoiler? Well, a YM conversation with the Hottest of the Hot, formerly known as Little Miss Sunshine and self-confessed adik! Brace yourself… if you’ve read the book… no problem. If not, no problem either… it only means that you’re not a Harry Potter fan (since all fans but me have read it at this late hour) or you live in Timbuktu where the library does not sell Harry Potter.
